PRACTICE

Mullarkey Pedersen Architects is a design led partnership committed to meeting their clients' needs and objectives to produce quality design solutions. We consider ourselves as advocates for design that is firmly rooted in ESG: Environmental, Social, Governance.  Our ESG ethos is designed around a set of high standards that apply across all aspects of our practice.

This is achieved by considering every aspect of design in detail with the client and creating excellent working relationships with consultants, contractors and investors in a collaborative manner with our highly skilled design team.

Mullarkey Pedersen Architects provide both Architectural Services and Passive House Designer services.

Our success in this field has resulted in winning the prestigious 2022 Irish Building & Design Award for Sustainable Project of the Year, in recognition of our achievements at Erne Campus, Enniskillen, for South West College.

The Erne Campus is both the largest building in the world to achieve Passive House Premium certification and is also the first educational building in the world to achieve Passive House Premium certification

Passive House is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in building design, which reduces the building's ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling.

Passive House Premium requires an even higher standard of sustainable design – it is awarded to buildings that not only meet the Passive House standard for fabric efficiency and ventilation, but that also generate a significant amount of renewable energy on site.  Erne Campus, designed and constructed with meticulous attention to the building fabric, features nearly 1,600 photovoltaic panels on the roof, capable of generating 116 kWh per square metre of floor area, with excess energy stored in Tesla batteries.  As a result, the Erne Campus building effectively produces its own power on site through renewable resources, making it totally self-sustainable.  Erne Campus is also the first building in the UK to achieve both Passive House Premium and BREEAM Outstanding accreditations.

Our History

The practice traces its roots back to Liam McCormick, who founded his original practice with Frank Corr in 1962.  Together they practiced as Corr McCormick until 1968, at which point Liam founded Liam McCormick and Partners.  After expansion in the 1970s the practice name changed to McCormick Tracey Mullarkey Architects, when Tom Mullarkey became partner in the firm.  Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s the practice added to their reputation for quality design, being honoured with numerous design awards, including the RIAI Gold Medal for St Aengus' Church in Burt, Co. Donegal, which was also named 'Building of The Century' by a national poll just before 2000.

In 2004 McCormick Tracey Mullarkey was restructured as Mullarkey Pedersen Architects under the partnership of Tom Mullarkey and Karl Pedersen. Ciaran Mullarkey joined as partner in 2006.

Architecture

Mullarkey Pedersen Architects is an award winning chartered architects practice that will help you to achieve your aspirations and visions through intelligent strategy and design solution.

We have a proven track record in the procurement of top quality architecture to the complete satisfaction of our clients.

We possess the experience, expertise and commitment to provide a service that exceeds our client’s expectations, striving for excellence.

We provide full architectural services as described in the RIAI and RIBA Plan of Work and to this bring added value from the design expertise of our team to create spaces and buildings that are considered, intelligent and enjoyable.

Conservation

We are a RIAI Grade 1 Accredited Conservation Architectural Practice with extensive experience in this sector, which is demonstrated with the large number of historic projects that we have helped to give a new lease of life, celebrating their original quality.

Sustainable Design

We consider every project with sustainability in mind.  It is an area of design that can be applied practically at a low cost by incorporating simple principles at an early stage of feasibility and consultation. ‘Green energy’ solutions can be incorporated to help increase the performance of a building for the benefit of the user. A holistic approach is adopted when considering the most practical and efficient use of these green energies and each individual project is tailored on its own merit. Mullarkey Pedersen Architects was awarded the highest Excellent BREEAM environmental rating for any building in N.Ireland for the Waterways Ireland Headquarters, which embodies the fundamentals of innovative design, whole life costing and sustainability.

BIM

Mullarkey Pedersen Architects is pro-active with the exploration and integration of BIM (Building Information Modelling) across the practice. We have gained knowledge of many BIM technologies and processes by using them on live projects.  BIM offers a variety of benefits to the entire project team, with cost and quality enhancements to our clients by generating value through the entire life cycle of an asset.

Health & Safety

Health and safety must be considered from design conception to project completion.  We provide in-house Construction Design and Management (CDM) and Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP) services in the UK and Ireland, co-ordinating and communicating the effective management of risks and hazards between client, contractor, architect and consultants. We are Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) accredited.

 Architectural Technical Advisory Services

Mullarkey Pedersen Architects have developed extensive experience in the provision of architectural advisory services in the project management of large and complex capital projects, helping ensure their successful delivery on time and within budget.

Project Management

When a building goes on site, a lot of people are required to produce a developed scheme, which needs leadership to bring the individuals together in an organised and controlled manner. Depending on the type of procurement chosen, Mullarkey Pedersen Architects can be appointed in a project management role for schemes produced by others as well as providing this service for all of our own projects.

Assigned Certifier (ROI)

The role of Assigned Certifier is a crucial one for all current and future construction projects in the Republic of Ireland. The Assigned Certifier is appointed by the Building Owner to inspect and certify the building works and to coordinate the certification by others.

Condition Appraisals

One of the first considerations for a site or existing building must be to determine the current condition of the substance of the site. Whether for an existing building or a new site, Mullarkey Pedersen Architects can produce a condition appraisal with options for a scheme to move forward. The services of other professionals, such as structural engineers and quantity surveyors will be organised and collated by MPA.

Master-Planning

Mullarkey Pedersen Architects have experience in developing and executing masterplan's for large complex sites, by imaginatively and expertly analysing disparate use types, building types, vehicular and pedestrian traffic, before using this analysis to create a comprehensive and unitary campus

Interior Design and Space Planning

We provide interior design and space planning for both solving and creating spaces. Through the use of 3D modelling, fly-thru’s and conceptual perspectives, we give our clients the opportunity to visualise their project throughout the design process. We can also provide services for individual interior design commissions.

Accessibility Audits

An Access Audit helps you to understand your obligations under the Equality Act and forms the basis of a plan of action to enable you to improve the accessibility of your building, environment or service over time.  By having an Access Audit and then implementing it’s recommendations you will be able to improve access for all.

Expert Witness

Mullarkey Pedersen Architects can act as an expert witness in a court of law or alternatively in the capacity of an adjudicator or arbitrator, acting impartially for parties involved in the resolution of a dispute.

Professional & Registered

Our team of architects are registered members of a number of regulatory and professional bodies including; the Architects Registers Board (ARB), the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, Association of Project Safety, Investors in People and Construction line. Membership with these bodies ensures that an appropriate level competence and high professional standard is maintained.
